Thousand Island Dressing
Thousand island dressing is a simple 5 ingredient recipe. I use it in my California Reuben Sandwich recipe.
The origins of this dressing are mixed. There are two stories. The first is one says that a fishing guide’s wife, Sophia LaLonde, made the condiment for her husband George’s dinner. The name comes from the Thousand Islands region located on the St. Lawrence River.
The second story is about George Boldt. He was a summer resident of Thousand Islands. He was the proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and put the dressing on the menu in 1894. The dressing was made up of ingredients that were on hand.
Whichever story you choose to believe we are the winners.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup sweet pickle relish
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- salt and pepper to taste
Directions
In a bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Allow the flavors to meld for about 30 minutes in the refrigerator, then serve.

This worked well for Reuben sandwiches. I had all the ingredients on hand, mixed it up quickly, and had dinner ready in no time.
