Whisperflo pump seal replacement
My WhisperFlo pump seal replacement was needed. It all started when my pump lost its prime. I found the pump running dry and who knows how long it had been doing that. My pump runs at night as that is the best rate for electricity. I just noticed that the pool was not as clear as it should be. So I turned on the pump and that’s when I found it had lost prime.
After I fixed the air leak problem I noticed that there was a small leak at the pump coming out of the seal area. I thought that I could live with a small leak, but the small leak got big quickly and the noises from the pump were not good. So I ordered a seal and O-ring kit and made it a point to schedule it when the kit arrived at the house. I had replaced a seal and bearing before so I was not a novice to this procedure.
Tools Required:
- 9/16″ box wrench
- An adjustable wrench
- 3/32″ Allen wrench
- #3 Phillips screwdriver
- 1″ PVC coupling
- Hammer or mallet
Procedure to replace the seal on a WhisperFlo pump:
- Throw the circuit breaker so that no power is available to the motor.
- Disconnect the inlet and outlet pipes from the pump(I have unions on both pipes).
- Loosen(9/16 box wrench required) and remove the six bolts at the seal plate for the pump basket side(wet end) of the housing.
- Remove the housing.
- Loosen and remove the two Allen head bolts(3/32 Allen wrench required) from the diffuser and remove the diffuser.
- Remove the shaft cap at the rear of the motor and hold the shaft from spinning using an adjustable wrench.
Getting at the Seal
- Remove the left-handed thread screw(#3 Phillips screwdriver required) from the impeller.
- Spin the impeller off the shaft using your hand.
- Remove the four bolts holding the seal plate onto the motor.
- Using a screwdriver push the seal out of the seal plate from the motor side.
- Using a small screwdriver walk it around the seal to remove it from the impeller.
- Clean the places where the new seal will be mounted.
- Install the small side of the new seal ceramic side up. Don’t touch the ceramic seal surface. Use the screwdriver handle to push it into the impeller.
- Slip a one-inch slip(coupling) PVC fitting over the seal and tap it into the seal plate with a hammer or rubber mallet.
There you have it. A really simple procedure with many steps. But still very doable with very little skill required. Whisperflo pump seal replacement procedure can get your pump back up and working correctly in no time at all.
