Whisperflo Motor Replacement

Replacement Whisperflo Motor

Eventually, you will have to face a Whisperflo motor replacement. The replacement motor may not be identical to the original motor. This is what I experienced when I recently replaced my pool pump motor. The replacement motor is not identical to the original but it is compatible with the original.

A Note

When a motor replacement is called for the best practice says that the pump seal and the gaskets need to be changed out at the same time. After all, you are breaking down the power end of the pump and it would be a shame to have to take it apart again because the seal fails a few days after motor replacement.

Identical or Compatible?

Now I knew when I placed the order for the new motor that it would not be identical. I talked with a service tech at the internet store about the motor and whether I could use it with my Whisperflo pump. It turns out that I have an odd Whisperflo pump(WF-24) for the area that I live in. It seems that sometime before I bought it California law changed on this pump motor. The new law required that the motor is energy efficient(WFE-4). I did not know about that when I bought my pool pump on a popular internet auction site. I landed up buying a complete pool pump that was not the same as what was being sold in the brick and mortar stores in California.

So when it came time to order the motor I kept getting static about my pool pump motor model numbers being wrong. Luckily for me, I ran across a technical phone number on a motor being sold for my pool pump. This was on a popular internet auction site. I called the number and the guy on the other end was a goldmine of information. He explained what had happened to me and why the motor was correct for my situation. He also pointed me to an energy efficient model that would save me about fifteen dollars a month in energy usage. I ordered the energy efficient motor and a seal kit.

Installation

Installation is exactly like the original motor. The power will still need to be disconnected at the circuit breaker and verified that the connection is unpowered before working on the unit. The only difference is that the electrical connections will be slightly different because the physical location is different.

I took a photo of the original motor wire connections just in case my memory might need refreshing. The wires are still the same. Two wires and a ground wire keep the connection simple. The new motor had spade connectors at the screws that could be removed if needed. My wire connections did not use these type of connectors so I removed them for the wire installation.  I needed to remove the conduit connector from the old motor and transfer it to the new motor.

Conduit Connector

I installed the motor and new pump seal and it is the quietest pool pump motor I have ever had. Even more so than the original motor. The flow is really good.
