Best tri-tip sandwiches in Fresno
Best tri-tip sandwiches in Fresno. There are two places in Fresno highly rated for their tri-tip sandwiches on Yelp. Both of these places have reviews from their patrons that had eaten at both places. Some of the reviewers for each restaurant chose one place over the other enthusiastically. I had to be in Fresno a couple of times on business and since I consider myself a carnivore I felt deliciously challenged to see which one was really the best.
I am sure that there are other restaurants that people consider the best in Fresno. But this review is about these two places that I have eaten at and have reviews that chose one over the other. A personal delicious challenge that I felt I had to get to the bottom of, to see who should have the bragging rights. The two places are “The Dog House Grill” and “Mike’s Grill”.
The Two Places
I’ve eaten the tri-tip sandwich at both places. So I’ll describe the sandwich as it was served to me. Let me start with Mike’s Grill. I ordered the Jumbo Tri-Tip sandwich.
- This sandwich was served on a garlic toast French roll that stood up to the task of holding the sandwich together.
- The tri-tip was clearly smoked with a nice smoke ring.
- The meat was tender and well seasoned and sliced thinly.
- There was enough meat on the sandwich to satisfy any carnivore.
- The barbecue sauce was served on the side. It had a definite sweet and smoky taste. Since I ordered the jumbo version I probably should have ordered an extra barbecue sauce.
Mike’s Grill
Mike’s Grill is a small place. Not much bigger than a construction site trailer. They are located in a cul-de-sac type parking lot within a large shopping center. There is a smoker/barbecue mounted on a trailer in the parking lot. You order the food at the very small building. There is a small covered seating area in the middle of their parking lot. Some stools at the back of the building complete the seating for eating your order. My guess is if you arrive at a busy time you will eat in your car or take it away to eat it. When your order is complete someone walks out of the building with your food in a bag and yells out your number.
The Dog House Grill
It, The Dog House Grill is across the street from Fresno State. The sandwich as I was served it.
- This sandwich was served on a French roll that was more than adequate to hold the sandwich together.
- The tri-tip had a nice smoke ring.
- The meat sliced thinly is tender and well seasoned.
- There was enough meat on the sandwich to satisfy any carnivore.
- Barbecue sauce is served on the sandwich. The sauce was sweet and spicy(not hot). Again(it might be my personal preference) I should have ordered some extra barbecue sauce.

The place is rather large. One great room with a kitchen at the side of the building. A bar at the front of the building rounds it out. The seating is rather unusual it is self-seating so if there is an open spot help yourself. The restaurant is divided into two areas, full-service and self-service. My guess is if you arrive at a busy time you will have a long line to deal with and then seating is another thing you will have to deal with. The parking lot is rather small so you may need to park on the street or adjacent parking lots.
And the Winner Is…
Fresno is the winner. Clearly, these are both great sandwiches. In my opinion, they are only differentiated by the barbecue sauce. Let your preference for barbecue sauce be your guide. Sweet and spicy or sweet and smoky? So If you’re in the mood for barbecue and looking for tri-tip you can’t go wrong at these two locations. You’ll be the winner.

OK Ray. here goes my review of your review of the best tri- tip sandwich in Fresno. As for the roll I agree the Dog House Roll is far more adequate. Now in my opinion and my family members, Dog House has triple the amount of meat than Mike’s. In fact I just finished Mike’s sandwich and there was more roll than meat on the second half. In fact out of the four sandwiches we got from Dog House we all took enough meat out to make another sandwich however both meats were thinly sliced and tender but Dog House was more tastier. Bottom line. if I wanted to satisfy my huge appetite Dog House wins. btw, they are both located in Fresno to clarify the winner.
Hello David,
First thing I’ll say is thank you for your comment. Each comment provides proof that someone read the post and it has generated enough interest to draw out your voice. Again thank you for the comment.
I’m glad that you and your family members tried out both places. Each has their fans but what I like is that Fresno is the clear winner in having both of these eateries serving the community. They are as different from each other as I have ever seen. With each one having their strengths and weaknesses. If you want something quick choose one place if you want to sit down and enjoy the energy of the crowd with your meal choose the other. But whatever the mood your in you will be the clear winner whichever you choose.
