The Wobble Extension

The wobble extension belongs in your toolbox. The reasons are many. But the best reason is that it will save your bacon one day. You’re going to run up against a bolt that you can’t approach in a straight line. Something will be just slightly in the way and present you with a dilemma. Do I take it apart or do I reach for my wobble extensions? But I’m getting ahead of myself again.

What Extensions Do

Let’s explain what an extension does. The extension is used on a ratchet or breaker to extend the reach of a socket from the ratchet. It comes in many lengths. The distance is measured in inches between the ratchet to the socket. It can be as short as an inch or extend out to feet. There are various drive sizes of ratchets and sockets. So the extensions can be a 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″ drive version.

The Many Types of Extensions

There are many specialized extensions. Like the finger spinner type or the universal extension adapter. The flexible extension is a wire cable type extension. While the impact drive type extension can take the pounding of an air tool. There are extensions that lock the socket onto the extension to keep it from losing the socket deep in an engine or a place where it can not be retrieved. There are drive adapters that will change the drive size from one size to another size.

The Wobble Extension

The wobble extension will allow you to turn the socket from a slight angle. This angle will let you come at the hard-to-reach bolt at a slightly different angle. It may allow you to remove the bolt without having to remove the object that is in the way.

I like to use a combination of wobble extensions for hard-to-reach bolts. It almost looks like the extension has a curve in it. It starts out with a long extension and then a short extension. Both of them being wobble-type extensions. The first longer extension gives you a 15º angle and the second shorter adapter gives you an additional 15º of angle.

So there you have it, the reasons these extensions should be in your toolbox. These specialized extensions will make your life easier and save your bacon one day.
