The Ravioli House Review
The Ravioli House is a little place tucked into a San Mateo, CA. the nondescript building where if you blink you could pass it by. Boy am I glad I didn’t pass on this deli.
My wife and my sister decided they needed to attend a quilt and sewing show at the nearby San Mateo Event Center. As usual, my assigned task was the designated driver. As the designated driver, I usually get to pick where we eat. But this time my sister got to pick. Her pick turned out to be a local chain restaurant that we(my wife and I) had experienced before quite bad to be exact. I had done some research and found this “hole in the wall” deli with good reviews and amazing pictures of their offerings. I suggested we detour to The Ravioli House in light of the really bad food we had experienced at the other place.
Finding this place
The back door of the deli has the most prominent sign announcing this establishment. It also has a metered parking lot back there that made finding parking really easy. We didn’t know if we could walk thru, but yes you can walk thru to the deli. Convenience added to the experience, a plus for a new patron.
Inside the Deli
This is a self-seating, order at the counter, help yourself to bottled/canned sodas/waters kind of place. They were serving sandwiches and made on the premises ravioli for our lunch. Seating is sparse we got there after the lunch rush had steamrolled thru. We found seating easily.
You order your sandwich, select your bread, add extras and move past the salad selections to the next station. Turn around select your drinks and pay for the meal. A simple but very efficient process. Since we didn’t order plates of ravioli on this visit I can’t tell you about that experience.
There were four in our party and it turned out we each ordered different sandwiches from the menu. Our good fortune allowed us to taste most of them.
We ordered the Meatloaf sandwich, the Pulled Pork sandwich, the Meatball sandwich, and the Brisket Pastrami sandwich.
The Bread
This round the sandwiches were on whole wheat, Ciabatta, and sourdough bread. All of these bread types were fresh, real bread no wimpy bread here. All of the loaves of bread added to the enjoyment of each of the sandwiches.
The Sandwiches
The meatloaf had been cooked in the smoker and had a nice smoky flavor. The brisket was piled on and had enough meat to satisfy my inner carnivore. I didn’t get to taste the meatball sandwich but there were plenty of meatballs in that sandwich and my sister said it tasted as good as she had imagined it would. The pulled pork sandwich had plenty of meat and was seasoned very well. Of the four sandwiches, I found it very hard to pick a “best of the show” but the pulled pork won simply because I just enjoy pulled pork.
Now don’t get me wrong, each of these sandwiches was delicious. I found that once I took that first bite I couldn’t stop until each half was gone.
So if you find yourself near San Mateo, based on my experience I can clearly say “Try this place out you can’t go wrong.”
