The Quilt Show Experience
The quilt show experience is something that happens to me every so often. As usual, I’m the designated driver. My wife and my sister have a network that ensures no quilt show goes undiscovered. We usually attend the Fresno, Sacramento, Pleasanton and San Mateo shows. So I thought since I’m always at one of these things I may as well see what the draw is that gets hundreds of women to go.
Who goes to the quilt shows
The demographics of these shows are definitely targeting women. All ages with a wide variety of interests, not just quilters, but those that sew, those that embroider, and those that scrapbook. Most of the men at these shows are like me the designated driver.

The Quilt Show Experience
My wife and sister always want to get there early so that they can wait in line. More on this later.
All the shows we attend require parking fees. Some shows require an admission price. Some shows have discount coupons that will get you into the show for free. Once you’re in you will be in line to get into the show. This is where getting there early counts. The show promoters will, depending on the show location pass out tickets to those waiting in line. Then prior to entering the show they have “a drawing” for various things. Some cash and some sewing kits are offered as prizes. I have personally had a winning ticket twice in the last couple of years.
Also while standing in line various vendors come by and inform those waiting of classes that are offered and the type of product that the class will produce.
Inside the Show
Once in the quilt show, the vendors have small to large booths that showcase various products from needles to large format sewing and quilting machines. Not all of the vendors are sewing based some shows have vendors for kitchen knives, creams for the skin, and quilter organizations in the area. This is in addition to the quilt type products.
There is usually a large area where various foods and drinks can be purchased. This is normally where the “designated drivers” convene and trade show stories. I usually come prepared with a tablet and a fully charged cell phone to pass the time. I haven’t found free wifi at any of these shows.
