How to Text Combined Email and Text Group
How to text combined email and text group at the same time became my problem recently. It seems that everyone has one technology phobic person in their lives. You know the one that is always behind the curve in learning how to do new things with new technology or not wanting to learn at all. Well, it seems that I have a long time friend that does not text. He prefers to use email. All the while my other friends and I have moved on to text messages. But I still want to be able to include him in the group and send him an email at the same time as I send a text message to this group.
Looking for a solution
I started by looking for a solution on Google but everything kept coming up as send a separate email thru the text system(SMS). I don’t want to send a separate duplicate message of the text message just for my email buddy. Also, I did not want another app. I want to have my email friend included in my text message group. This way when I tap that send button all my text people and my email buddy will receive the same text message.
Didn’t find it
All the time while searching I kept thinking my search words aren’t right. That I needed to change my search terms and then I’ll find it. I didn’t find it. But a seed had been planted in my mind and I kept looking. I had to let that seed germinate. I wasn’t willing to duplicate my efforts while texting. This got me to thinking about how they were sending a text message to a single email address. That was the seed.
Let’s grow that sprout
Now before I continue let me reveal which phone/system I used. The phone that sent the text is an Android phone. The SMS system is from TMobile. I also had help for the iPhone testing from the editor of Hangryfork.com. So I know that this technique will also work for that system.
So back to the Android phone, for the test, I didn’t want to bug my friends with test text messages. I thought that to start I could make an entry into my contact list.
- So I made a new contact labeled “My Email”.
- I had to add another field under which I found an “Email” option.
- After I added that field then it allowed me to enter my email address.
- I added only my internet email address(no phone number).
- A quick save with the email as the only field completed the entry.
Send a test text
I already had a contact labeled “My Phone” which has my cell phone number as the only field. Now I could create the mixed email/text recipients just by selecting these two contacts as recipients while sending a normal text. So my test was a simple three-word statement “Get stuff done”. I selected “My Phone” and “My Email” and typed in the words and hit send.
Success, sort of . . .
My cell phone carrier converted the text message to an email. I didn’t need an app. It just worked. My internet email address received the text message as an email. I must state that there were some attached files that showed up on my internet email. It must have been part of the screen as it was sent. I ignored those included/attached files and just read the text message. It was in the main body of the email. As for the text received on my cell phone, it was a normal text.
Conclusion
So it is possible to send a single text to a mixed group of email and text users. Just make sure you create a duplicate contact for your email only friend with only the email(no phone number) and nothing else(label the contact name so that you know instantly it’s the email only contact). This will also work for the iPhone system. Again thanks to Hangryfork.com for their help with the iPhone test.
