Storing your RV refrigerator

Storing your RV refrigerator Blue Card for DometicStoring your RV? Is your refrigerator ready? If you’re storing your RV refrigerator for a long period of time it could build up mildew. After cleaning there is quite a bit of moisture still left in it. This moisture needs to evaporate away to prevent mold or mildew. Without moisture mold and mildew cannot grow. Here are a few ways in which you can accomplish this easily.

Towel method

The first method uses a towel. Simple fold a dish towel in thirds and place it on the top part of the door so it comes between the seal and the refrigerator body. This is a method I had used for many years on one of my rigs. I like it because it doesn’t cost you a dime to use this method. The only thing you must know is that you will need to remove this towel before moving your rig. The refrigerator doors are not locked or secured and will be swinging around if you don’t.

Blue Tab Latch extender

This device is really called “Dometic Refrigerator Door Prop Card For Airing“. A real mouthful. Whatever the name, these little pieces of plastic extend your latch so the doors are closed with a large gap and they secure the door so that it can not freely swing around. I am currently using these as my method of storing the refrigerator. The video below shows you how easy they are to install and remove for camping.

Built-in convenience

If your brand of refrigerator is Norcold then you may be in luck. Some of these models have a spacing feature built into the doors of the refrigerator. The following video shows you where the pins are located and how to activate them.

Aftermarket brackets

If none of the above methods work for you then you can go to the aftermarket for their innovations. The following video shows just such a product called the “fridge door stay“. It attaches to the door temporarily and the wall of the refrigerator to hold the door open.

There you have it whether it be built in, aftermarket, attached factory accessory, or a simple towel don’t forget to prop those doors open to prevent mold and mildew if you’re storing your RV refrigerator.
