Smog Shop Surprise In Modesto
I had to smog my truck by the end of March. I had already found out about the new smog rules. No need to do the usual oil change, or the additive in the gas tank, new air cleaner filter pre-smog routine. So I gathered up a coupon for the smog shop I had used last year when I smogged my car.
Do I need a Coupon
When I was printing out the coupon I noticed that it mentioned a free smog for active military. I thought that was pretty unique as that is nothing I have normally seen. Most of the time the coupons present a discount over the off the street price. In fact, that is what happened when I smogged my car last year. I got a discount. So that is what I was looking for again for this vehicle.

But as I read on I noticed that they had included veterans too. What? I told myself that this must be a misprint and that while it was on the coupon it would not be happening. A misunderstanding between what is active military and what are veterans.
The experience
So on the day I had allotted for getting the truck smogged I gathered my coupon, my DMV registration smog required document and jumped in the truck and off I went to the smog shop. I was soon pulling into the smog shop parking lot and noticed that they were busy. Oh well, some time spent in the waiting room would not be bad as I knew the new smog procedure would not take that long per car.
I presented my documentation and coupon. I made it a point to ask about the veterans discount. Was this a real discount for veterans or was it a misunderstanding. Either way, I figured I would get a discount. But with the veteran’s discount one heck of a discount. Yes, the man behind the counter replied. The discounted price(Free) was for veterans. But only one veteran discount per year.
What do I need?
I asked what was the proof of service needed to get the discount. Would I need to present my DD214 or would my VA Medical Card suffice? Luckily for me, the VA card was good enough. So I would need to pay for the certificate and nothing more. Boy Was I having a great Day.

So you are asking where and what shop is doing this in Modesto. The smog shop is called Freedom Smog. My experience was absolutely great. They got my truck in and out in about 15 minutes. The waiting room was comfortable and the technicians friendly. Also for us veterans downright cost effective.
