Reverse Osmosis Add a membrane flush kit
Add a membrane flush kit and extend the life of your RO membrane. The purpose of the flush kit is to help prevent scaling or fouling of the reverse osmosis membrane. By removing the contaminants(thru flushing) from the membrane it extends it’s life.
Membrane fouling is a process whereby a solution or a particle is deposited on a membrane surface or in membrane pores in a processes such as in a membrane bioreactor, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, or nanofiltration so that the membrane’s performance is degraded.
How a membrane works
A RO flow restrictor is matched to the GPD(Gallons Per Day) rating of the membrane. If you have a 75 GPD membrane the restrictor has the same rating.
What a membrane flush kit does
A membrane flush kit bypasses the flow restrictor providing a rapid rinse situation which washes away impurities from the membrane and allows the membrane to clean itself. Under sink units not fitted with flush valves, can easily add them. After adding the flush kit you will need to flush the membrane on a timed basis.
How often do you flush the membrane?
Once per month or every other month(depends on water demand usage) drain the water from your holding tank(open the RO water spigot) and wait for it to drain then close the spigot. Now, as the tank is trying to refill open your RO membrane flush kit valve and let the membrane flush itself for five to ten minutes. Then close the flush valve and wait for the holding tank to refill. That’s it you’ve accomplished an RO membrane flush.
How do you know if it’s working?
The use of a TDS meter will help you determine your membrane’s cleanliness. Measure the water before flushing the membrane and again after flushing. The difference in TDS is how well the procedure has cleaned your membrane.

Working with the reverse osmosis fittings
I like working with the fittings on my reverse osmosis system. They are super easy to connect and almost as easy to disconnect. The fittings are the push type connectors. It is these super easy connectors that make this modification a snap to complete. This two-minute video shows you how to connect and disconnect the tubing. It also gives you a cutaway view that shows the internals of the fittings and how they give you a watertight connection.
