Removing and Installing a lawn mower blade
Removing and installing a lawnmower blade is a pretty simple procedure. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Always work on a cold lawn mower to eliminate burns. Keep safety in mind or it could cost you a hand or worse before attempting this procedure.
Safety First
Before doing anything remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
- You will need a block of wood to keep the blade from turning during removal and installation.
- Remove the gas cap and place a plastic bag over the tank opening and reinstall the fuel cap.
- Lay the mower over so the gas tank opening is the highest point on the mower as it is laying on its side.
- Wedge the block of wood in the mower so the blade can not turn.
- Loosen the blade bolts
- Hold the blade as you remove the blade bolts.
- Reverse the procedure to install the new or sharpened blade and balanced blade.
- Torque the blade bolts per the recommended torque values.
Walk behind mower blades are installed between 38 and 50 foot pounds of torque, and riding mowers are between 70 and 100 foot pounds of torque using a standard bolt thread pattern, which is also referred to as right-handed or clockwise thread.
