Post Hole Digger

I hate a post hole digger. Why do you ask? Well anytime you pick one up there is a lot of work on the end of it.  I own one of course. As a homeowner with wood fences on three sides of my property, I can’t be without one.

I was first introduced to the species as a young man working in a rental yard. We had all sorts of equipment to dig post holes. I was impressed by the power versions but they always required two people to operate them. If your part of a crew not bad work, but as a homeowner, I tend to find myself alone when building/repairing a fence. So it would always seem to be the manual variety that would be best for the job.

The Post Hole Digger(clamshell version)

If you have ever been on the business end of a post hole digger(clamshell version) you’ll know that the process is very hard on your body. You pick the thing up and slam it into the ground to create the hole. Then you push the handles apart to scoop the dirt into the clam part of the post hole digger. Then you repeat that process over and over again until you get to the depth you need.

Well somewhere along the line I borrowed a post hole digger from a friend and he had a version that I had not used before. This was an auger version. Well, I was totally surprised at how easy it was to use. Why would anyone ever want to use the clamshell version when an auger is so easy to use.

The Post Hole Auger

The auger post hole digger is simple to use. First set the digger to the width you need(if your model is so equipped). Place the post hole digger on the ground at the hole location and start twisting. It is surprising how fast this thing works.  The auger will dig down and fill the basket area with dirt. When that basket area is full pull it out of the hole and dump nearby. Repeat until your depth is where you need it. I find with my soil(sandy loam) that it is very easy to get to a three-foot depth in no time at all.

The video shows how effective the auger is. He is digging a well so if your using it for a fence post the depth will not be so much. He does make a good point, larger rocks will cause the auger to skip during the digging process.

I really like the auger type post hole digger. No more jamming it into the ground. No strain on your upper body or back from all the slamming into the ground. Just twist and lift. It also is much faster to get to your desired depth over the clamshell.

Advantages

One other thing I like about an auger post hole digger is that the hole is very small compared to the clamshell version. Since the handle does not need to spread to bring the dirt to the surface it tends to be a very small hole. If you’re the concrete around the post kind of person this tool will save you quite a few bags of post concrete over its lifetime.
