No work shrub stump removal
No work shrub stump removal is possible. My mugo pine hasn’t been looking well for the past two summers. I watered it and gave it some extra care but it didn’t respond. I believe that it is about thirty plus years old so it may just be time for it to go.
Today I told myself it was time for it to go. So I got out my favorite shrub removal tool and a shovel. What is this tool? It’s a reciprocating saw. Not just a reciprocating saw but a saw with a special blade. The blade will make short work of cutting the branches. The blade is a pruning blade. It’s about 9″ long, but I have had one that was 12″ long.
I cut off the branches a few inches above the ground. So now I’m left with the stump. This is normally where the work will begin. You know the drill. There is always work at the end of the shovel anytime you pick it up. Not today!

I did not say no shovel
When the saw finishes cutting a full circle around the dead shrub remove the saw. Plunge the shovel along the cut circle and pry up all around the shrub. Along the way, the shrub will start to tilt. This is good as this will be the point where the reciprocating saw will cut the remaining roots that are going straight down.
Grab that reciprocating saw and cut any remaining roots. You should now be able to remove the shrub stump from the ground. Congratulations you have just executed a no work shrub stump removal.

Conclusion
This procedure is effective as long as you know the location of your sprinkler water pipes. If the water pipes are near the shrub you will need to exercise caution. As for the blade, it will still be sharp enough to reuse it for another task. It is surprising that the blade can take the punishment and not get that dull cutting dirt and roots.
