Frugal Living Tip Camping
Going camping? Need firewood? Of course, you do. There’s nothing like having a roaring fire when your camping. Conjure up some thoughts about roasting hotdogs, marshmallows, smores, and a score of other things to go with that campfire.
How about free wood for your entire camping trip? Think about it, not having to fork over cash for a measly bag of wood. Also knowing that a bag will only be good enough for one night’s fire.
Campground Vulture?
No firewood? You could do a campground vulture tour. Circling the entire campground checking for any campers leaving behind a pile of firewood for other campers to use. Yea, I’ve done that. Instead wouldn’t you like to be that camper? Bringing enough firewood to burn your entire stay and then leaving a pile behind for the other campers as you leave. Well, you can be that person each and every time you go camping and it won’t cost you a dime. Free campfire wood. All that you can burn or want to carry for your camping trip.
The above photo collage is examples of free firewood I found near me when I started this article. As you can see, it comes in all sizes and conditions but the one thing in common is that it is all free. These piles were from a large metropolitan area near me.
Think Craigslist, Offerup, Marketplace
Think Craigslist, Offerup, and Marketplace when you’re going camping and you’ll get that free firewood. About a month or two before my camping trip I start looking for firewood on Craigslist. Look under “Free Stuff”. I usually can find it and in enough quantity for the entire trip. Most of it is very well seasoned and usually cut into firewood lengths. Some pieces are big and some are small. I like a mix. When you get the small ones going it’s always nice to throw on a big piece so that it will blaze into the night and leave you a nice bed of coals for the next morning.
Most people giving away the wood are trying to clean up their yards or property. They have cut down a tree(s) in the past and now want the wood gone. Or they burned wood in a fireplace and no longer need the leftovers. There are lots of reasons but all those reasons are opportunities for you to have a campfire every night.
Criteria for firewood
I usually can find enough quantity for the entire trip. The only criteria I use is to make sure that the wood is dry. It’s the only thing that is a must. You don’t want wood from a green tree that has just been cut down. Most of the offered wood is very well seasoned and usually cut into firewood lengths. Some pieces can be big and some are small. If the offered wood is a small pile I take the whole thing. There is no “cherry picking”.
I like a mix of large and small pieces. When you get the small ones going it’s always nice to throw on a big piece so that it will blaze into the night and leave you a nice bed of coals for the next morning.
The next time you’re going camping remember this frugal living tip camping and remember Craigslist for free camping firewood and keep that cash in your pocket.
