The Black Algae Bloom Attack

If your reading this you may have a black algae attack in your pool’s future? Have you got a black algae bloom in your pool? It recently happened to me. Now don’t get me wrong. This is not a couple of spots here or there in the pool. This is a suddenly there are spots of black algae practically everywhere you look kind of situation. Here’s what you’ll need to know to execute a black algae bloom attack and bring black algae to its knees(if it had knees).

Safety first

This procedure adds strong chemicals to the pool so no swimming is allowed for the day of and several days after the following procedure.

First thing, this procedure is for a gunite/ white plaster pool. If you have a black gunite/plaster pool rubbing chlorine tablets on the gunite may damage your plaster.

When working with acid wear all appropriate protective equipment especially eye protection.

Remove the pool cleaner from the pool for the next several days to protect it from the chemicals.

Event or Process?

This is a process, not a one-day event that gets everything done. So if you’re looking for an event this is not it. Black algae is hard to remove and eradicate once it is in the pool. It will take several days of working on it to drive it out of your pool.

What you will need

You are going to need some tools for this procedure. You will need a good stainless steel wire brush small in size(five inches wide is best) to be able to apply good pressure to the black algae head.  The second tool you will need is a tablet holder to rub down every black algae head that you can see. Optional is a large stainless steel wire brush for the days after the initial treatment.

Clean the filter

First things first, you are going to need a clean pool filter before starting this procedure. I have a sand filter so backwashing is called for to start. Then I will perform a deep clean procedure to ensure that the entire filter system is clean.
