The best method for heating tortillas in the microwave
Oh, this is so bad!
The best method for heating tortillas in the microwave became a necessity to me while I was eating a poorly warmed slightly damp tortilla fresh out of the microwave. I knew I had to improve on what I was doing.
Me and the tortilla
The tortilla has been and will always be part of my life. It had a big impact on me when I was growing up watching my mother make up and form the dough into balls, roll out and cook them. My sister and I could not wait to get our hands on a fresh tortilla from mom’s stack of tortillas. We would butter and eat them, taking us to fresh tortilla heaven.
What is wrong
The tortilla warmed up and not sweating from the microwave warming process became an important search for me. Warming them on plates, paper or ceramic produced a sweaty tortilla. Wherever the tortilla was contacting the plate it became sweaty. The moisture being released during the warming process was trapped by the plate. There had to be a way to wick the moisture away from the tortilla so it wouldn’t get sweaty.
I found the answer on a summer day. We were having a barbecue and there was plenty of food as normal. I had to warm up some food in the microwave. Since we were using paper plates for the barbecue I put the plate holder and the paper plate with the food into the microwave, the idea swept across me in an epiphany.
What if I used only the plate holder and no paper plate?
What if I used the plate holder to hold the tortilla during the warming process in the microwave. I slipped a tortilla onto the plate holder. With eager anticipation, I slid the plate holder into the microwave and waited for the microwave to finish its cycle. I pulled out the plate holder and examined my tortilla. It was perfect, not sweaty, perfectly warm just like the tortillas I used to pull from mom’s tortilla stack. I grabbed some butter!
