Kitchen Basics® Professional Grade Heavy Duty Apple Peeler, Slicer & Corer at Amazon.com

It’s time to use my apple peeler, corer, slicer machine. When it’s fall the apples are plentiful and it’s time to make apple butter, applesauce, apple pie filling.  So my machine comes out and goes to work.

This machine does all the work at once. Or it can just peel the apples. Or it can core and peel at the same time. It depends on what you want it to do.

What it can do

  • Peel, core, and slice apples
  • Peel apples and potatoes
  • Slice and core apples without peeling
  • Make curly french fried potatoes

Suction-based or Clamp?

You can purchase this peeler in two versions. The suction version like the video model above needs a smooth top surface. The large suction cup produces a secure mount for the machine provided that the surface is smooth. A couple of “pumps” of the handle will secure it to the surface. This is the type I have and it works well on my granite countertop.

The other version is a clamping type that clamps the peeler to the table or surface. Either version will work well provided the countertop surface meets the need of the particular machine.

Machine setup

Every manufacturer’s machine is very similar and slightly different in small ways. But the things that will make your machine successful is how you set up the machine and how you place the apples on the prong. Follow the manufacturer’s directions.

When you get your new machine make sure to setup the peeling knife so that it peels and does not throw away half the apple with the peel. Set up the knife so that it produces a fine peel.

Before you run an apple or potato thru your new machine you need to make sure the corer slicer is centered on the prongs. That way when you run the apple against the peeler the prongs will not ruin the corer slicer. The corer slicer can be pulled back and locked out of the way when not needed. Then as needed be released and will center upon the prongs because of your prior setup.

More Tips

When mounting the apple on the prongs make sure to align the center of the apple(the core) on the machine to eliminate additional work of removing the bits and pieces of the core missed due to misalignment.

Make sure that the apple is pushed all the way against the prongs up to the core(no gap between the apple and the prong).

Press gently on the peeler as it starts to peel the apple to prevent skipping and the additional work that comes with skips. Or you can pre-peel the top and bottom of the apple in an effort to reduce the work.

Hard apples peel better than soft apples. Soft apples may sling juice where hard apples will not.

With one of these machines your apple butter, applesauce, and apple pie filling chores will always be a pleasant memory.
